Guide to Hills and Dales Estate Engagement Photos
As an Atlanta engagement photographer, I love getting to explore new places with my couples, but Hills & Dales Estate in LaGrange always stands out. It’s not far from the city, but once you’re there, it feels like you’ve stepped into a peaceful old-world retreat. Between the historic Italian-style villa and some of the most beautifully preserved gardens in the country, it feels both romantic and timeless.
I always recommend Hills & Dales to couples who want photos that feel elegant but still relaxed. Whether you’re walking hand-in-hand through the boxwood gardens or standing in front of the ivy-covered walls, it’s easy to find photo spots that feel special.
Thinking about doing your engagement session here? Having photographed couples at Hills & Dales before, I’m excited to share what makes it such a great spot. Plus, I’ll share a few tips to help you make the most of your session!
One of the things I love most about Hills & Dales Estate is how many great photo spots we can use without needing to go far. The property has such a good balance of formal gardens, quiet pathways, and that beautiful Italian-style architecture. There’s no shortage of options! Whether you’re going for timeless and elegant or something a little more relaxed and romantic, it truly has it all.
Here are some of my favorite locations for engagement photos around Hills & Dales:
This is one of the first spots we’ll likely visit. The large lawn in front of the house has a stunning fountain that photographs so well, especially in softer light. It’s a great place to start if you want something classic and clean.
This area is full of charm. You’ll find trimmed hedges, flowers in bloom, and curved pathways that add depth to your photos. I love using this spot for more romantic, up-close moments.
It’s a small structure, but it adds a totally different vibe. I usually bring couples here if we want something a little more whimsical or tucked away. The natural light filtering through the glass is so pretty.
These long pathways lined with hedges or blooms give us that elegant garden look you’d expect from a European estate. It’s perfect for walking shots or classic portraits with a timeless feel.
If you’re into the grand house aesthetic, the back steps are a must. The view from here is just gorgeous, and the steps give us a bit of elevation to play with for some editorial-feeling poses.
Want something a bit more laid-back? The wooded areas around the estate give us softer light and a slightly more natural backdrop. I usually suggest this part of the property for more candid, relaxed photos, especially toward golden hour.
Each of these spots brings something different to your engagement session. Depending on the time of year and the light, I’ll usually create a loose route for us to make sure we’re hitting all the best areas while still keeping things easy and fun.
Wondering what to wear for photos here? As your engagement photo photographer, I’m here to help! Since the estate has such a refined, garden-party vibe, I always recommend outfits that feel polished but still comfortable. Think soft pastels, earthy tones, or classic neutrals. Flowing dresses and crisp button-downs tend to photograph beautifully against the gardens and architecture. If you’re planning to do two outfits, one dressy and one casual is a great combo.
Bonus tip: Avoid super bold patterns or neon colors. These can clash with the natural setting and won’t photograph as well. And if you’re unsure, feel free to send me outfit options ahead of time. I’m always happy to help you decide!
Here are a few things to keep in mind as you plan for your Hills and Dales Estate engagement photos.
If we’re planning to take engagement photos here, we’ll need to reserve a photo session time in advance through the estate. The staff is super friendly and easy to work with, but it’s definitely something to plan ahead for, especially during peak seasons. We’ll work together to ensure this is handled before your session!
The way the light filters through the gardens and around the Front Lawn in the late afternoon is honestly dreamy. If we can time the session so we’re finishing up around golden hour, we’ll get that soft, glowy look in your photos that everyone loves. Don’t worry, though, this is my zone of genius, so I’ll help us plan the perfect timing.
The property is spacious, so comfy shoes are a smart idea (especially if you’re changing into heels for photos later). I always recommend bringing a bag with any essentials, like touch-up items or water if it’s hot.
Spring and early fall are especially beautiful at Hills & Dales, with blooming flowers and colorful foliage adding extra charm to the gardens. That said, even in winter, the structure and layout of the estate still photograph really well.
Since Hills & Dales is in LaGrange, why not turn your engagement session into a little getaway? You can explore the nearby historic downtown, grab coffee or lunch at one of the local spots, or even stay overnight at a nearby bed and breakfast. It’s a great way to enjoy the moment and make the whole experience feel even more special.
Here are answers to some frequently asked questions leading up to your session.
There is a photography fee required to shoot on the property. It’s $125 during business hours, and it’s $300 after business hours. We’ll need to schedule your session and pay the permit fee in advance through the estate.
The estate is typically open Tuesday through Saturday. Photo sessions are scheduled during specific hours, so it’s best to check with the staff when booking to make sure the preferred time is available.
Yes! There’s a designated parking lot right by the visitor center. It’s free and an easy walk to the garden entrance from there.
It depends on the time of year, but the gardens are gorgeous in every season. Hills & Dales has a great seasonal bloom guide you can check out to get an idea of what might be in bloom during your session.
Yes, there are restrooms available near the visitor center, and you can typically use them for changing if needed. I always recommend arriving early if you plan to change clothes before we start.
Unfortunately, no pets are allowed unless they are service animals. If including your pup is a must, I’m happy to suggest a few other dog-friendly engagement photo location ideas!
