A Charleston Photographer’s Guide to Engagement Photos
As a Charleston photographer, I can honestly say this city is one of the best places you could choose for engagement photos! From the pastel-colored homes and cobblestone streets downtown to the live oaks dripping with Spanish moss and the breezy shoreline, Charleston offers an endless variety of beautiful backdrops.

Throughout this post, you’ll see photos from Allison and Kevin’s Charleston engagement session. These two are high school sweethearts who first met in church, became best friends, and have been together ever since 2013. They got engaged in October 2024 when Kevin surprised Allison with a proposal in The Founders Garden at UGA. For their engagement photos, we kept things timeless by strolling near City Hall and just wandering downtown’s most charming streets.
Keep reading for my best recommendations, tips, and inspiration for your engagement photos from a Charleston photographer.

Charleston is full of gorgeous locations, and the best part is that each one brings something unique to your photos. You can easily combine two or three spots during your session for variety, or keep things simple by focusing on one favorite area.
Here are some of my top recommendations:
This is where Allison and Kevin chose to take their photos, and it’s always a favorite. With pastel houses, ivy-covered walls, wrought iron gates, and cobblestone streets, downtown is always so charming. There’s a reason so many couples are drawn here for portraits. It’s timeless, elegant, and feels uniquely Charleston.

If you want water views paired with Southern charm, The Battery is perfect. You’ll find grand antebellum homes, shady oak trees, and a beautiful view of the harbor. White Point Garden offers plenty of greenery, which balances nicely with the more architectural shots downtown.
Waterfront Park is home to the famous Pineapple Fountain. This area blends coastal vibes with historic Charleston character. It’s great for couples who want both greenery and a touch of the harbor in their photos.
For a more relaxed vibe, heading out to the beach is a wonderful option. The sand and waves make for romantic and natural photos. Folly Beach has long stretches of shoreline, while Sullivan’s Island has quieter spots perfect for a more intimate feel.
If gardens and sweeping landscapes are more your style, one of Charleston’s historic plantations makes a beautiful backdrop. Magnolia Plantation is known for its romantic gardens, winding paths, and dramatic oak trees. Another option is Middleton Place, which has manicured lawns and classic architecture. Both offer that Southern elegance I love as a Charleston photographer.
This is a hidden gem for couples who want something different. Hampton Park has wide open fields, blooming flowers in the spring, and peaceful walking paths. It feels a little less busy than some of the other Charleston spots, which makes it a great choice if you prefer a quieter area.

What you wear for your session can make a big difference in the overall look of your photos. I always recommend outfits that reflect your personality but also complement the setting we’ll be in.

Here are my top outfit tips as a Charleston photographer:
Coordinate but don’t match. Choose colors and styles that go well together without looking too similar.
Think about the setting. A flowy dress and heels look gorgeous downtown, while a sundress or casual outfit feels natural at the beach.
Add layers and accessories. Jackets, hats, or jewelry can add variety without having to fully change during the session.
Stick with neutrals and soft tones. These photograph beautifully against Charleston’s pastel walls and greenery.
Stay comfortable. You’ll be walking around and moving a lot, so wear something you feel confident in. Consider packing an extra pair of shoes for walking between locations, too!

Engagement photos should feel like you, and Charleston is one of those cities that makes it easy to add personal touches.
Here are some of my favorite ideas for making your session unique:
Celebrate with a drink. Pop champagne by the waterfront, or head to one of Charleston’s charming bars or cafés for cocktails or coffee. It’s a fun way to break up the session and get candid photos.
Include your pets. Charleston is very dog-friendly, and bringing your pup along makes the photos even more personal. Just let me know ahead of time so I can help you choose locations that work well with dogs.

Plan an activity. Stroll through the market, grab ice cream, or ride bikes through the historic district for lifestyle-inspired moments.
Highlight your story. Choose locations that mean something to you. If you had your first date downtown, or if the beach is your happy place, incorporating those into your photos makes them even more special.

The good news is that Charleston is beautiful all year, but each season brings its own benefits.
Spring is one of the most popular seasons for a reason. The flowers are blooming, the weather is comfortable, and the city feels alive with color. Allison and Kevin’s May session was perfect. It was warm, but not too hot, and the light was soft and golden.
Summer can be hot and humid, but evening sessions close to sunset give us beautiful light and cooler temperatures. This is also a great season for beach sessions. Have a look at Laura Lee and Caleb’s Charleston engagement photos for summer session inspiration!
Fall offers mild weather and fewer crowds, which makes it one of my favorite times for engagement sessions.
Winter is the quietest season in Charleston. It rarely gets very cold, and the slower pace means you’ll have more privacy at popular locations. A light sweater or jacket is usually all you need.

Engagement sessions are one of my favorite parts of the wedding planning process. They give you the chance to slow down, enjoy this season, and have photos you’ll treasure for years to come. Charleston is truly the perfect setting!
