Ultimate Guide to Swan House Engagement Photos
It’s no secret that I love capturing couples at the Swan House! Its timeless architecture and lush gardens make it one of the most iconic spots in the city for engagement photos. From the cascading fountain to the boxwood garden and ivy-covered columns, there’s something magical around every corner.
I photographed Dan and Maddy’s proposal last year, and now I’m excited to document their Charleston wedding next year. Their Swan House engagement photos are chic, romantic, and full of personal touches that reflect who they are as a couple.

Dan and Maddy had their first date on December 11, 2020, and they say the conversation flowed so easily that it felt like they’d known each other forever. Dan proposed at the Georgian Terrace Hotel, and I had the honor of photographing the moment. We then explored the hotel for photos before their engagement party. Their Swan House session captured that same effortless, romantic vibe that their proposal did. As their photographer, being part of their proposal, engagement, and soon their wedding has been so special.
If you’re considering Swan House engagement photos, a little planning goes a long way. The venue is part of the Atlanta History Center, and a permit is required for all photography sessions. I always recommend reserving your session in advance to ensure we have access at the ideal time for light.
The Swan House offers some of the best light in Atlanta for golden hour photos. I usually schedule sessions a couple of hours before sunset, so we can move around the fountain, terraces, and boxwood gardens while the light is soft and glowy. Weekdays are less crowded, making it easier to capture uninterrupted photos.
There’s a convenient parking lot near the visitor center, and it’s an easy walk to the gardens. This makes changing outfits or grabbing any extra items simple. When I photograph couples here, I always plan a route through the grounds that maximizes the best photo spots without feeling rushed.
If it rains and you’re not into the clear umbrella look, we can always reschedule. The Swan House architecture does offer a few covered spots, but I still recommend having a backup date just in case of a true downpour.

The Swan House is beautiful year-round, and each season offers a slightly different look for your photos. Since most of the estate is outdoors, the gardens and light change with the seasons.
Here’s an overview of what you can expect during each season:
Spring: Roses bloom and greenery is lush. Perfect for fresh, romantic photos.
Summer: The gardens are vibrant, and the late afternoon sun adds warm, soft light. It can be hot, so I always recommend bringing water and a fan for comfort between shots.
Fall: Fall foliage adds rich colors and a warm glow, especially in October and November.
Winter: Even with fewer blooms, the architecture and terraces create elegant, timeless photos. Jackets can add a cozy touch.
There are so many spots around the Swan House to capture beautiful engagement photos. Each area has something a little different, and I love that we can get a variety of looks without traveling far.

This fountain at the front of the estate is a classic spot for romantic photos. The flowing water adds motion, and the surrounding gardens create an elegant background. I love using it for close-up shots and wider photos that show the estate’s beauty.
The boxwood garden is quiet and intimate. The clipped hedges make natural frames for photos. The greenery works well with almost any outfit. This is a great spot for relaxed, candid moments.
The ivy-covered arches add a dramatic and timeless touch. Antique cars nearby add a bit of vintage charm. This spot works well for couples who want classic, editorial-style photos with personality.

The little side gardens and winding paths are easy to miss, but they’re perfect for more playful, relaxed photos. The light filtering through the trees and hedges gives everything a soft, romantic feel.
With so many spots close together, we can hop from one to the next without any stress. Your session will feel relaxed and fun, and we’ll get a mix of photos that show off all the different areas.

Outfit choice is key to making your session feel cohesive and polished.
Flowing dresses in soft pastels and neutrals photograph beautifully against the gardens and architecture. Long dresses add movement and elegance, and layering with light sweaters or jackets works well in cooler months.
A button-down shirt with tailored pants is a safe and stylish choice. Earth tones, navy, and gray coordinate well with most outfit choices for partners. For a dressier look, add a sport coat; for casual shots, a well-fitted sweater works perfectly.
Avoid neon or overly busy patterns.
Bring shoes for walking between locations and consider swapping into dressier shoes for photos.
If planning two outfits, choose one polished and one casual for variety.
Most importantly, wear something that makes you feel confident. When you feel good, it shows in your photos!

Here are the answers to questions you may have when planning your Swan House engagement photos.
Do we need a permit for Swan House engagement photos?
Yes, all photography sessions require a permit through the Atlanta History Center. I’ll guide you through the process to make it easy.
Can we do a walkthrough before our session?
Absolutely! A walkthrough is a great way to envision your session. I know the Swan House well and can guide you to the best spots for photos.

Generally, pets are not permitted, except for service animals. I can suggest alternative locations, like Piedmont Park, if you want to include your dog in your session.

Late afternoon, a couple of hours before sunset, gives the softest light. Weekdays are quieter and ideal for uninterrupted photos.
Is the Swan House good year-round?
